This is my fourth go-round with chain-letter batter. My mom had a "Herman" back in the 1970's; I received starters in 1992, 1995, and March 2012. I've always given up on my own starters because we don't like how the bread tastes with the pudding mix. I've been tinkering with the basic recipe, but we are still not satisfied. My first try I just left the pudding out; the bread was too heavy to stay together and came out of the pan in pieces. The second try I reduced the amount of oil, but now I think I need to reduce the bake time as well, since the the bread is, of course, less moist with less oil.
Is there a recipe for the basic bread without the pudding? Or, is there an easy way to search the recipe box for pudding-free recipes? Might there be a way to flag them somehow?
I had more success with a pudding-free chocolate chocolate chip coffee cake using the starter. I think it needs more cocoa powder; maybe I'll post it when it's just right.

Hi Duckie Duckie

Thanks for stopping in. Almost ever recipe in the recipe box includes pudding as an ingredient. The exceptions would be listed under Rustic Sourdough Variations. The pudding mix is something that was included in the original recipe and we are trying to keep to that here in the Kitchen. Feel free to experiment. If you check the recipe box, we have created a chocolate and a vanilla pudding mix that is homemade. That works as a great substitution for those who can't find pudding where they live or don't like to use store purchased pudding.

Hope this helps!
