Pick up your mixing bowls and grab a bag of starter … it’s time for our Spring Amish Friendship Bread baking contest at the Kitchen!
We’re looking for some fresh and tasty new ideas for our Recipe Box, which currently has over 200 Amish Friendship Bread recipes. We’re hoping to have over 250 by the summer. Help us reach our goal!

Submit a new Amish Friendship Bread recipe and you could win an Amazon gift card. We’re giving away one $75 gift card and two runner-ups will receive $25 gift cards. As a bonus, the first five qualified entrants will receive a copy of Kitchen Founder Darien Gee’s novel, Friendship Bread, in addition to being entered to win.
The contest runs from now until April 15, 2012 April 18, 2012. We are going to include all qualifing new recipes submitted to the Recipe Box since January 1, 2012. See the list of submitted entries at the bottom of this post. Here’s the contest in a nutshell:
Browse our Recipe Box and look for an Amish Friendship Bread variation (bread, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, etc.) that’s not currently in the Recipe Box but you think should be in there. Pull out your 1 cup of starter and create a winning variation. We want you to test the recipe (it has to work), share your Kitchen Notes (tips for people trying your recipe for the first time), and snap the best picture you can using natural light versus flash if possible.
Still interested? Great! Here are more specific guidelines. Please read them carefully and leave a comment below if you have questions. We want this to be fun and easy for everyone!
- Every recipe must use at least 1 cup of this Amish Friendship Bread Starter.
- If you use a variation of the above starter (i.e., a diabetic or gluten-free starter) that is not in our Recipe Box, please submit that recipe as well. You will receive credit for this recipe as long as it meets the other guidelines below (and it will count as an entry). We’ll also link the two in our Recipe Box.
- If your recipe calls for a frosting or glaze, please submit that recipe and photograph as well. You will receive credit for this recipe as long as it meets the other guidelines below (and it will count as an entry). We’ll also link the two in our Recipe Box.
- Recipes must be tested in your own kitchen and the pictures must be taken by you of that specific recipe. You must submit at least one recipe; three is preferred.
- This contest is for new recipes currently not found in our Recipe Box. Recipes that currently exist or are markedly similar will not be considered–we are looking for something fresh and new!
- Your recipe must be unique and not found elsewhere. It’s okay to take the basic recipe and make modifications, but do not claim someone else’s recipe as your own without making reasonable modifications (for more about recipe copyrights and the terms of service governing this site, please click here). Amish Friendship Bread has been around for a while, as have many of the variations. Therefore many of the recipes are already in public use, and we recognize this. The Recipe Box attributes recipes that are submitted by users and the Kitchen (“submitted” vs “created” or “owned”), so while you can submit commonly-used variations that do not currently exist in our Recipe Box, please make sure that you’re not just grabbing it verbatim from someone else without acknowledging that.
- You can submit as many Amish Friendship Bread recipes as you’d like! Each recipe will count for one entry (note: recipes for starters, frostings and glazes will not count unless accompanied by a recipe using Amish Friendship Bread starter. If you submit a recipe for an Amish Friendship Bread variation and a glaze that pairs with it, you’ll receive credit for two entries. If you only submit a recipe for a glaze, it will not be considered as an entry on its own).
- To qualify for the contest, you must complete all fields in the Recipe Box submission form, including ingredients, measurements and instructions. Partial recipes or those that require us to “fill in the blanks” will be discarded. Look at the format of the recipes in the Recipe Box for an easy way to format your recipe.
- Each recipe must be accompanied by at least one photograph; three is preferred. When possible, use natural light (take your picture in the morning, near a window) instead of a flash. If possible give us a shot of the bread whole as well as sliced. The best images are often the simplest: the bread on a plate with only one or two other elements in the shot.
- If we receive qualified, duplicate entries of similar recipes from different entrants, both entries will count towards the contest but only one may end up in the Recipe Box.
- All entires and/or pictures submitted may be added to the Recipe Box whether or not you’ve won and may be used for any promotions or book collections. You will always receive attribution where possible. If you do not want your recipe in the Recipe Box or included in any promotions or books, please indicate such at time of submission–it will not affect your chances of winning.
- You will receive full credit for submitted the recipe and photographs. If you have a website or blog, we are happy to link to it.
- This contest is for new recipes submitted during the contest period (January 1, 2012 to April 15, 2012).
- Judging will be based on creativity, use of Amish Friendship Bread starter, and the photo(s). All recipes will be featured on our website and/or Facebook page and attributed to the entrant.
- There will be three winners. One $75 Amazon Gift Card grand prize winner and two $25 Amazon Gift Card runner up winners. First five qualified entrants will receive a copy of Kitchen Founder Darien Gee’s novel, Friendship Bread.
Feel free to post your questions below and we’ll do our best to get back to you. Are you ready? Let’s get baking! Good luck!
