  1. Preheat oven to 325° F (165° C).
  2. In large bowl combine dry ingredients except walnuts.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and blend. Stir in apples, orange rind and starter.

  4. Add dry ingredients to wet mixture and combine. Add walnuts and combine.

  5. Grease two large loaf pans.
  6. Dust the greased pans with a mixture of ½ cup sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.

  7. Pour the batter evenly into loaf or cake pans and sprinkle the remaining sugar-cinnamon mixture on the top.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes or until the bread loosens evenly from the sides and a toothpick inserted in the center of the bread comes out clean.
