“One of our favorite uses for Amish Friendship Bread starter: biscuits that go great with any meal!”

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 24
Yield: 24 biscuits

Ingredients

1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup oil
1/4 stick butter, melted
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder

Directions

  1. Preheat over to 325° F (165° C).
  2. Combine all wet ingredients except butter in a medium-size bowl.
  3. Combine all dry ingredients in a larger bowl and make a well in the center.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the well and whisk until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  5. Transfer dough mixture to a lightly-floured surface and roll (or pat with your hands) to 1/2-inch thickness.
  6. Using a 3-inch round cookie cutter, cut out biscuits and place on lightly greased cookie sheet.
  7. Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter. Cover loosely with oiled plastic wrap and let rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes, removing when the tops are lightly browned. Serve immediately.
  9. Enjoy!

Kitchen Notes

If you don’t have a rolling pin handy, flour your hands and use them to pat the dough to the desired thickness. You can also use the mouth of a clean jar (finally a use for that leftover spaghetti sauce jar!) to cut the biscuits, dipping the jar occasionally in flour to keep the dough from sticking.

    Sorry to say, we were very disappointed with this recipe. Much prefer traditional baking powder biscuits. Also, I found the batter much too sticky to handle, added probably another 1/2 cup flour before I was able to handle it at all, and found it too sweet. Ended up eating as a dessert bread with jam, which was OK.

      Thanks for sharing, Jean! Yes these are a tad sweeter than your typical baking powder biscuits because of the sugar in the starter. These have a different taste when you use the Sugar-Free Starter in the Recipe Box.

    Could this recipe be used for pizza dough or bread sticks?

      We have not tested the Starter with pizza dough or bread sticks but it is on our “to do” list. If you get it done before we do, please let us know how it turns out.

    Since there is only one of me, I make two batches up and then after cutting them out, I wrap them in parchment paper and freeze them. Then I take out one or two biscuits from the freezer to cook up with my meal. Always fresh and always tasty!
